چکیده

Although there are numerous publications on amygdala volumetry, so far there has not been many studies on modeling local amygdala surface shape variations in a rigorous framework. This paper present a systematic framework for modeling local amygdala shape. Using a novel surface flattening technique, we obtain a smooth mapping from the amygdala surface to a sphere. Then taking the spherical coordinates as a reference frame, amygdala surfaces are parameterized as a weighted linear combination of smooth basis functions using the recently developed weighted spherical harmonic representation. This new representation is used for parameterizing, smoothing and nonlinearly registering a group of amygdala surfaces. The methodology has been applied in detecting abnormal local shape variations in 23 autistic subjects compared against 24 normal controls. We did not detect any statistically significant abnormal amygdala shape variations in autistic subjects. The complete amygdala surface modeling codes used in this study is available at http://www.stat.wisc.edu/∼mchung/research/amygdala.

Local Shape Representation in 3D: from Weighted Spherical Harmonics to Spherical Wavelets

Both weighted spherical harmonics (SPHARM) and spherical wavelets (SW) have been used for local shape representation of biological structures. In this paper, we shed light on the underlying connections between weighted SPHARM and SW. A novel derivation of SW from weighted SPHARM and a detailed formulation of wavelet transformation for shape representation are presented. Their performances on lo...

Encoding Cortical Surface by Spherical Harmonics

There is a lack of unified statistical modeling framework for cerebral shape asymmetry analysis in literature. Most previous approaches start with flipping the 3D magnetic resonance images (MRI). The anatomical correspondence across the hemispheres is then established by registering the original image to the flipped image. A difference of an anatomical index between these two images is used as ...

General multivariate linear modeling of surface shapes using SurfStat

Although there are many imaging studies on traditional ROI-based amygdala volumetry, there are very few studies on modeling amygdala shape variations. This paper presents a unified computational and statistical framework for modeling amygdala shape variations in a clinical population. The weighted spherical harmonic representation is used to parameterize, smooth out, and normalize amygdala surf...

Modeling Hole Surface- and Bulk-Mobility in the Frame of a Spherical-Harmonics Solution of the BTE

In a spherical-harmonics expansion formulation of the semi-classical Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) the influence of surface-scattering mechanisms on mobility are investigated, accounting for both global and local scattering mechanisms, with reference to holes in silicon. The analysis successfully reproduces the experimental data.

Frequency-Based Representation of 3D Models using Spherical Harmonics

3D meshes are the most common representation of 3D models. However, surfaces represented by 3D meshes may contain noise or some unrequired details. Multiresolution representations and filtering techniques are very useful in this case. In this paper, we propose a new and compact representation for the surface of a general 3D mesh using the spherical harmonics. This representation can be useful i...
